Caustic soda
- Chemical formula: NaOH
- Form: Colorless, highly hygroscopic crystalline substance that easily absorbs moisture from the air, soluble in water.
- Pharmacological properties: It has a strong bactericidal effect. With increasing temperature and the addition of a small amount of sodium chloride, the disinfectant activity of the drug increases. The antimicrobial effect is based on a change in the pH of the medium, dehydration of microbial cells and the formation of alkaline albuminates.
- Storage conditions: Store the concentrate in closed rooms at a temperature of 0 to 24ºС.
- Packaging and shelf life: It is sold in the form of caustic soda (liquid preparation), which contains at least 42% NaOH, and in solid form (contains 92-95% NaOH). Packed in polypropylene bags with a valve and a polyethylene liner with a mass capacity of 25 kg. Working solutions are stable for 6 months.
Effectiveness of use: 2-5% aqueous solution kills most vegetative forms of microbes. 5% solution kills anthrax microbes in 2 hours, 10% solution in 1 hour, and 30% in 10 minutes. Caustic soda solution kills foot-and-mouth disease and hog cholera viruses, fowl cholera pathogens, and many indoor animal parasites.
Application standards: Solutions are prepared in clean glass, plastic and enameled containers with lids or directly in disinfectant installations. For disinfection of premises with foot-and-mouth disease, pasteurellosis, tularemia, bovine pneumonia, swine fever, mycoplasmosis, plague and infectious laryngotracheitis of birds, caustic soda is prescribed in 2% concentration. 3% solution of caustic soda is used for disinfection with brucellosis, Aujeszky's disease, listeriosis, paratyphoid fever of calves and pigs, pig pica, and pullorosis of birds. For tetanus, 5% aqueous solution is prescribed. For disinfection with dermatomycoses, 1% solution with 2% formaldehyde is used. For disinfestation of ascariasis in pigs, a 2% hot solution (70°C) is used.
Overdose: It is important to follow the instructions for use.
Special precautions: Disinfection of insulated wagons is not recommended.
Special precautions for personnel: Use protective gloves, goggles, and special clothing when preparing solutions and performing disinfections.
